This herb is used in formulas to treat indigestion or poor digestion by enhancing internal metabolism, promoting proper movement of food through system, moving food downward, and transforming phlegm. It is also used in many formulas to negate other herbs' secondary effect of slowing down metabolism when such an effect is not desired.

Cautions in Use
Do not use this herb where there is a dry cough from deficient Yin or Qi. Use cautiously where there are heat signs such as expectoration of phlegm, or where there is thick yellow or green phlegm with coughing.
