Common Usages
Shan Zhu Yu can be decocted Ginseng (radix ginseng) which will be discussed later, to treat patients extremely cold sensations after profuse perspiration.
To treat insomnia, fry 20g shanzhuyu quickly over low heat until it is dry, grind into powder to soak in 5 cups of wine and seal in bottle. Leave for one month, shaking the bottle once a day. Then strain it to drink the wine, twice a day, in the morning and in the evening.
To treat other diseases, decot 10g Shan Zhu Yu in water for consumption in a standard manner.

Traditional Usages and Functions
This herb is used in formulas to treat copious sweating, leaking urine and sperm, pain in the lower back and knees, dizziness, poor hearing, ringing in the ears, prolonged menstruation, and in extreme cases, shock (TCM: "leaking" Essence).

Remarks
Experiments have shown shan zhu yu to be effective in inhibiting gastrointestinal peristalsis and in reducing blood sugar. Since this herb is obstructive, it is not recommended for those wìth constipation.

Cautions in Use
Do not use this herb when there is painful or difficult urination, or if there are heat and dampness symptoms.
